In today’s fast-paced world, staying informed, growing your network, accessing reliable professional development resources, and finding effective ways to engage and contribute can feel overwhelming. Every day, we’re bombarded with endless email newsletters, algorithm-driven social media feeds, and recommendations on the latest industry tools. How do you filter the noise and find what truly matters? How do you curate the right people and the correct information to help you learn, grow, and progress?

Enter the Personal Learning Network (PLN)—your curated system for professional and personal development, lifelong learning, and growth. Imagine having a personalized system that helps you navigate the complex world of information, connecting you with the right people and resources to achieve your goals.

What Exactly is a PLN?

Let’s take a moment and break down what a PLN actually is. Think of the PLN as your personalized learning hub. It’s a hub of people, networks, resources, and tools you intentionally cultivate, engage with, and utilize to expand your knowledge, identify opportunities, and develop new skills. Your PLN is a guide for connecting with others online and offline to learn, collaborate, and grow together. It’s about building meaningful relationships that support your learning journey.

My PLN Journey: Lessons Learned Since 2013

My PLN journey began in graduate school as a class project, revealing how I would manage my professional development activities for years to come. I wrote about my early experiences with PLNs in a 2013 guest post on Tame the Web, sharing my initial steps in creating a transparent, adaptable, and creative PLN. This experience provided valuable insights into the core principles of building, adapting, and maintaining a successful network, which I continue to use today.

Here are the key takeaways from that experience:

  • Intentionality is Key: Define your learning goals and mission.
  • PLNs Evolve: Your network should adapt as your career and interests change. I started mine as a graduate student and am now adapting it again as a business owner, consultant, and aspiring author. My PLN allows me to connect with experts in each of those areas.
  • Active Engagement Matters: The more you participate, the more you gain.
  • Balance is Essential: Your PLN should support both professional and personal growth.

Now that we know what a PLN is, are you ready to build your own PLN? In my next post, I’ll dive into the practical steps of designing your personalized learning framework.
